What is ADAS?

Each of these relies on sensors — forward-facing cameras, radar emitters, and sometimes ultrasonic or lidar units — mounted at precise points on the vehicle so the car knows exactly where the road, the lane lines and other vehicles are relative to itself.
Those sensors are aimed to fractions of a degree. A camera behind the windshield, for example, is calibrated to look at a specific point down the road. Shift its aim by a hair and the picture it hands the car's computer no longer matches reality.
Why a collision throws ADAS off
When sensors or cameras are moved, removed, or blocked even slightly, they can produce errors or fail to respond correctly. That's the core problem after any collision. Replacing a bumper cover, straightening a fender, swapping a side mirror or installing a new windshield all disturb the exact positions those sensors depend on — and the vehicle has no way of knowing it's now aiming at the wrong spot.

Static vs. dynamic calibration
Recalibrating ADAS realigns the sensors to OEM (manufacturer) specification. There are two methods, and many vehicles require one, the other, or both depending on the manufacturer's procedure:
- Static calibration is performed in the shop. The vehicle is positioned precisely and manufacturer-specified targets — patterned boards and reflectors — are set at exact distances and angles in front of it, so the sensors can re-learn their reference points in a controlled environment.
- Dynamic calibration is performed on the road. A technician drives the vehicle under specific conditions — set speeds, clear lane markings, certain distances — using specialized equipment so the system recalibrates against real-world reference points as it goes.
Both demand the right equipment, the right space, and the manufacturer's documented procedure for that exact make, model and system. It is not a dashboard reset.
When is ADAS calibration needed?
Calibration is typically required any time a repair touches — or moves something near — a driver-assist sensor. Common triggers include:
- Bumper repair or replacement, front or rear, where radar and parking sensors live.
- Mirror work, which can house blind-spot and lane cameras.
- Windshield replacement, which relocates the forward-facing camera behind the glass.
- Suspension or alignment work, which changes the vehicle's stance and therefore its sensors' angle to the road.
- Any repair that houses or moves an ADAS sensor, even if the damage looked cosmetic.
